Private student loans
Private student loans follow different rules
Federal forgiveness programs apply only to federal loans. Private loans follow the terms of your contract with the lender, so the first step is knowing which kind you have.
Check what you actually have
Many borrowers hold both kinds. Your federal loans are listed in your account at StudentAid.gov.
Ask your lender
Many private lenders offer hardship options such as reduced or paused payments for a period.
Death and disability
Some private lenders discharge loans after death or total disability. Check your loan agreement.
Federal loans have more options
Income-driven repayment and Public Service Loan Forgiveness are available only for federal loans.
